Abstract The general model of regeneration dynamics in Nothofagus forests of southern South America could have value in community ecology if predictive relationships between disturbance history, functional traits and site attributes could be identified. Examined here is the proposal that on favourable sites shade‐intolerant Nothofagus are likely not to survive in competition with shade‐tolerant, broad‐leaved evergreen taxa of temperate rain forests, and persistence, thus, is dependent on periodic coarse‐scale disturbance. Comparison of stand dynamics of three old‐growth Nothofagus forests at different elevations in the southern Andes, Chile where deciduous Nothofagus alpina dominates the upper canopy, and examination of the life history trade‐offs of this variation were made. Stem density of all stems ≥5.0 cm d.b.h. was 233–303 stems per hectare, and basal area was 123.9–171.0 m2ha?1. Maximum lifespan of N. alpina was found to be greater than ca 640 years, exceeding all previously reported ages for this species in the region. Forests had a stable canopy composition for this long‐term, but some appeared to lack effective regeneration of N. alpina in recent years. Regeneration of N. alpina was generally greater in disturbed stands and higher elevation than in undisturbed stands and at lower elevation. Recruitment emerged to be strongly affected by competitive over‐ and understorey associates. There was a gradient of increasing dependence of N. alpina on disturbance towards the more productive end of the environment gradients, and hence less dependence of N. alpina on disturbance for its regeneration towards higher elevation. The study confirms that changes in forest composition may be explained by processes occurring in accordance with the predictions of the existing model of Nothofagus regeneration dynamics, providing stronger evidence specifically directed at mid‐tolerant N. alpina, and by factoring out regeneration dynamics on favourable sites. Thus, for N. alpina, trait differences probably contribute to the competitive advantage over its associates in productive habitats, and may be linked to small‐to‐intermediate‐sized disturbances which inevitably occur as older trees die, enabling N. alpina to persist in forests and therefore maintain species coexistence for the long‐term.  相似文献

选择 6月龄凡纳对虾 176只 ,测定了体长、头胸甲长、胸宽、胸高、额剑上刺数、额剑下刺数、尾长和上市体重共 8个性状 ,采用相关分析和通径分析方法 ,剔除了与体长及头胸甲长有共线性的自变量尾长 ,计算了以形态性状为自变量对体重作依变量的相关系数、通径系数、决定系数及相关指数 ,定量地分析了形态性状对体重的影响效果。结果表明 ,凡纳对虾 5个形态性状与体重的相关系数达到极显著水平 (P<0 .0 1) ;通径分析揭示了多元分析中多个自变量与依变量的真实关系 ,体长、头胸甲长、胸宽、额剑下缘刺数目对体重的通经系数达到显著水平 ,它们是直接影响体重的重要指标 ,其中体长对体重的直接影响(0 .4 2 8* * )最大 ,是影响体重的最主要因素 ,其次为头胸甲长 (0 .2 90 * * )和胸宽 (0 .2 4 5 * * ) ,额剑下缘刺数对体重的直接影响(0 .0 70 * )较小 ;胸高与体重的相关程度很大 (0 .792 3) ,但它与额剑上缘刺数对体重的直接影响都非常小 ,主要通过其他性状间接影响活体重 ,是影响体重的次要因素 ,均被剔除 ;决定系数分析结果与通径分析结果有一致的变化趋势 ;所选形态性状与体重的复相关指数为 R2 =0 .92 13,说明影响体重的主要自变量指标已经找到 ;多元回归分析建立了体长 (X1 )、头胸甲长 (X2 )、胸宽(X3)、  相似文献

Dimensions of oospores such as length, width, fossa-breadth, length-to-width ratio and number of striae were considered for morphological identification of the members of Charales. Oospores were collected from natural stands of three species, viz. Chara braunii, C. corallina and C. wallichii in ponds in West Bengal (India). Oospore dimensions (length, width and fossa-breadth) correlated well: though the fossa breadth–length relation of C. braunii showed lower correlation coefficient (r2 = 0.076, p < 0.001), all other five breadth or width–length relationships showed r2 ≥ 0.23, p < 0.001. These bivariate patterns were significantly different among the species (one-way ANCOVA of length–width ratio to fossa-breadth: adjusted means and slopes both p < 0.001), C. braunii and C. corallina has similar length to width ratios, C. wallichii and C. corallina were similar in width, whereas the species differed in breadth and length in the order C. braunii, C. wallichii, and C. corallina.  相似文献

To estimate the potential contribution of ethological and ecological parameters to the mechanisms of species formation and species isolation in the Palearctic cicada genus Tibicina , we constructed a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis of extant Tibicina species. Seven mitochondrial genes and a fragment of a nuclear gene were sequenced (3046 bp). Mitochondrial genes included 547 informative sites but the nuclear gene was too conserved to be included in the analysis. The tree was characterized by a basal polytomy indicating that Tibicina species arose rapidly. Such rapid radiation might explain the low divergence in the acoustic communication observed between species. Parameters describing habitat selection and acoustic communication were mapped onto the tree. A shift in habitat selection accompanied by acoustic changes might have contributed to one speciation event. The stochastic distribution of the same acoustic characters on the other branches of the tree implies, however, that the subtle acoustic differences between species could be the result of previous speciation events and independent evolutionary histories, rather than having contributed themselves in the speciation and isolation processes.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 611–626.  相似文献

Life‐cycle impact assessments (LCIAs) are complex because they almost always involve uncertain consequences relative to multiple criteria. Several authors have noticed that this is precisely the sort of problem addressed by methods of decision analysis. Despite several experiences of using multipleattribute decision analysis (MADA) methods in LCIA, the possibilities of MADA methods in LCIA are rather poorly elaborated in the field of life‐cycle assessment. In this article we provide an overview of the commonly used MADA methods and discuss LCIA in relation to them. The article also presents how different frames and tools developed by the MADA community can be applied in conducting LCIAs. Although the exact framing of LCIA using decision analysis still merits debate, we show that the similarities between generic decision analysis steps and their LCIA counterparts are clear. Structuring of an assessment problem according to a value tree offers a basis for the definition of impact categories and classification. Value trees can thus be used to ensure that all relevant impact categories and interventions are taken into account in the appropriate manner. The similarities between multiattribute value theory (MAVT) and the current calculation rule applied in LCIA mean that techniques, knowledge, and experiences derived from MAVT can be applied to LCIA. For example, MAVT offers a general solution for the calculation of overall impact values and it can be applied to help discern sound from unsound approaches to value measurement, normalization, weighting, and aggregation in the LCIA model. In addition, the MAVT framework can assist in the methodological development of LCIA because of its well‐established theoretical foundation. The relationship between MAVT and the current LCIA methodology does not preclude application of other MADA methods in the context of LCIA. A need exists to analyze the weaknesses and the strengths of different multiple‐criteria decision analysis methods in order to identify those methods most appropriate for different LCIA applications.  相似文献

A biosimilar is a biological medicinal product that is comparable to a reference medicinal product in terms of quality, safety, and efficacy. SB4 was developed as a biosimilar to Enbrel® (etanercept) and was approved as Benepali®, the first biosimilar of etanercept licensed in the European Union (EU). The quality assessment of SB4 was performed in accordance with the ICH comparability guideline and the biosimilar guidelines of the European Medicines Agency and Food and Drug Administration. Extensive structural, physicochemical, and biological testing was performed with state-of-the-art technologies during a side-by-side comparison of the products. Similarity of critical quality attributes (CQAs) was evaluated on the basis of tolerance intervals established from quality data obtained from more than 60 lots of EU-sourced and US-sourced etanercept. Additional quality assessment was focused on a detailed investigation of immunogenicity-related quality attributes, including hydrophobic variants, high-molecular-weight (HMW) species, N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NGNA), and α-1,3-galactose. This comprehensive characterization study demonstrated that SB4 is highly similar to the reference product, Enbrel®, in structural, physicochemical, and biological quality attributes. In addition, the levels of potential immunogenicity-related quality attributes of SB4 such as hydrophobic variants, HMW aggregates, and α-1,3-galactose were less than those of the reference product.  相似文献

The ecosystem service (ES) framework is gaining traction in ecosystem management as a means to recognize the multiple benefits that ecosystems provide. In forested ecosystems, many structural attributes (trees, understory plants and woody debris) create heterogeneous ecosystems that provide numerous ecosystem services, including many that are culturally important. However, application of the ES framework to forest management is challenged by difficulties measuring and comparing multiple ES across diverse and heterogeneous forest conditions. Indicators can help bring the ES approach to forest management by providing a means for accurate ES inventory and mapping. We measured 10 forest ES in contrasting forest types to investigate the effects of past forest harvesting in coastal temperate rainforest of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Our objectives were to build a systematic set of ES indicators for coastal temperate forests based on forest structural features, including trees, coarse woody debris, and understory plants. To achieve this, we 1) analyzed field data to compare the effects of forest age (old-growth vs. second-growth) and ecological site conditions (riparian vs. upland forest) on the bundle of ES provided by different forest types; and 2) worked with a local indigenous wood carver to identify attributes of cedar trees (Thuja plicata) essential for traditional uses, including canoe carving. Forest age and forest type had significant and major effects on bundles of ES. Old-growth forests provided three times higher carbon storage, nine times higher wood volume, and eighteen times higher canopy habitat services than recovering forests. Within old-growth forests, the proportion of trees suitable for traditional indigenous wood carving was significantly higher in riparian stands. Yet of 456 trees measured, only 17 were cedar with potential traditional uses. Of those, trees for canoe carving were the least frequent (n = 3), which we identified as large (>110 cm DBH) trees of exceptional quality. In general, old-growth riparian forests were a hotspot of ES, providing for example nearly three times as much carbon storage as old-growth forests on upland sites and 12 times the amount of carbon storage as found in second-growth forests on upland sites. These results indicate that typical inventories of forest ES, which usually generalize across heterogeneity, may oversimplify dramatic variations in ES bundles in forested landscapes. Our novel set of stand-level ES indicators can improve the accuracy of ES assessments, incorporate important cultural ES, and help address the role of landscape heterogeneity in influencing ES.  相似文献
